Key location:

When you arrive the key will be in the key safe by the front door. The key code is 5108. Please return the key to the key safe upon departure.

You can park by the house, but to get there you need to open the gate, drive through and then close the gate. The lane points steeply down after the gate and can be a bit tough to drive through the gate, stop on the hill, close the gate and then drive down the hill. We suggest that you drive to the house, then walk back up the hill and close the gate. It's only a case of 50 yards or so. Parking for up to 5 cars by the house. There is a small parking area on the road above the house which would fit another car.

There is a locked shed on the end of the property next to the log store. Inside the shed is a varnished box to place laundry bags on top of.

Cleaning

 

Where are the cleaning products kept?

Please top up supplies of plastic bags, foil etc. in the drawer by the fridge. Make sure that there is a kitchen roll in the holder and 2 toilet rolls in each bathroom.

Main store of cleaning products is in the under stairs (no guest access to this) but a small supply are kept under the kitchen sink.

Please leave the bottle of hob cleaner next to the cooker rather than under the sink.

In the bathroom please leave toilet cleaner and cream cleaner.

The cleaning products should be Eco friendly where possible due to the septic tank, when stocks are running low please contact the office to arrange a top up.

The bin liners are Brabantia 20 L slimline these are provided by the owner

Covid Procedures

The house windows are opened in as many areas as possible during the clean.

The owners have now built up a stock of pillow and mattress protectors which will be rotated on every changeover. There are bags in the under-stairs cleaning cupboard which are marked up.

The cushions and throws are also rotated and the owners have marked each area up with special closing fasteners on bags.

The books and games are still displayed however they have signs asking guests to wash hands before using.

Heating and Hot Water

Storage Heaters

Cleaner instructions for heating settings:

Please ensure that storage heaters are switched on at the wall. They should usually be left on 'input' 5 and 'output' 2.

In very warm weather, 'input' should be set to 0 and in very cold weather 'input' should be set to 9 (max).

Normal settings for hot water, how do visitors boost this if they need to?

Hot water is either on or off. Immersion heater – in a cupboard in the bathroom upstairs. It has two switches which should be left on all the time, otherwise water will not heat up.
Turn these on when you arrive.

There are two corresponding switches for the immersion heater in the kitchen, located above the storage heater. The daytime switch, (called “Top Water Heater Boost”), lights up when operating during the day. The night time switch, (called “Bottom Water Heater Off Peak”), lights up at 10.30pm when the off-peak tariff begins. They override the switches in the bathroom and thus control when the water is being heated. Ideally you would make maximum use of night time cheap power and limit use of the expensive daytime tariff.

There is a saperate shower next to the bathroom. In the event of no water coming out of this shower, this may be due to an air lock. Don’t continue running the shower as it might ruin the pump. Simply unhitch and lower the showerhead and let it hang down and try again.

Other special instructions for cleaner

 

Please Sally's Cottages know about the following before 5 o'clock on the day of departure if the guests are more than 30 minutes late in departing, if they have left the cottage very dirty or if any damage has been caused

We will then discuss this with the cottage owners and then we can arrange to withhold part of their damage deposit if necessary.

Please let the owners or Sally's know straight away if anything is noticed missing/damaged/malfunctioning and need mending/replacement before the next let (including owners-so we can bring stuff up with them)

Please check the kitchen inventory each month and let Sally's Cottages and/or the owners know if you anything needs replacing. There are some laminated photographs in the cleaners cupboard which show what should be in each cupboard to make life easier.

Please check all lightbulbs on each changeover

Please ensure that no food is left in the kitchen cupboards at all, including oil, salt & pepper.

Please ensure that crockery and utensils in the kitchen cupboards are arranged neatly and in the correct cupboards according to the labels on the door.

Please can any delivered Shortridge Laundry be put away in the laundry cupboard inside the property and not left out in the shed otherwise it could sit for some time between bookings becoming mildewed and damp.

Please check smoke alarms during clean. You should be able to reach the button using the broom handle

Please check that pans are in the correct correct cupboards with lids on and pyrex dishes etc in the cupboards that they are supposed to be in.

If the outside store light shouldn’t be working for some reason there is a switch under a plastic cover on the wall opposite the door.

There are spare shower curtains in the cleaner cupboard.

The “Z” bed is in the cupboard in the twin bedded room, behind the bed.

The main gate into the drive it is very important to be kept closed even moving the vehicle down the hill allows the sheep into the garden and it's very difficult to get them out.

Please leave an outside light on during winter months and late Autumn very early Spring for incoming guests to help them locate key safes etc.

If there is room, a spare put-me-up bed will be kept to the left of the organ (no bedding provided for this)

The owner has provided detailed instructions for cleaner and a checklist which has been saved on google drive in the cottage folder.

The bin liners are Brabantia 20 L slimline, please order these rather than black bin liners.

Aikin is down as a 6.5 hour clean however 30 mins of this is for the travel. We woudl expect the changeover itself to take 6 hours. Kitchen bin liners are in the cleaners/housekeeper cupboard - they are actually in a small blue box along with “J cloths”, small pedal bin liners, black bin liners, room bin liners - there should be packs of scouring pads, air fresheners, cleaning products in the cupboard.

Directions

Turn off M6 at Junction 40 (Penrith turn-off). Follow A66 west towards Keswick. When approaching Keswick, don`t turn off into Keswick but keep on A66 in the direction of Cockermouth. After the roundabout, look out for the sign to Braithwaite and turn left here. AIKIN IS 4 MILES (approx.) FROM HERE (The following distances are cumulative). After a ¼ mile from A66, turn left after campsite. Don't go to Lorton/Whinlatter. In the village turn left again over narrow bridge. Carry on towards Newlands/Buttermere. After ¾ mile, bear right. Don't go to Swinside. Fells rise continuously to the right. After 2 miles pass Stoney Croft (farm) on left, and go over narrow stone bridge at bottom of Causey Pike. After 2 ¼ miles, go past junction on left (which leads back to Stair, Portinscale and Grange,) and then past B&B Ellas Crag. After 3 miles, parking area on right, sharp bend to left, narrow bridge over Rigg Beck. Go past left turn to Newlands Church and Little Town. Just beyond is Birk Rigg Farm on right and farm buildings on left. After 3 ¾ miles pass Bawd Hall on left. After 4 miles reach Aikin on left (sign on wooden gate). (After 4 ½ miles Keskadale Farm is last habitation before Buttermere).
